Thailand Curfew Hours Relaxed

May 28, 2014 – 5:09 pm

The Thai military has announced a shortened curfew, now to operate from midnight until 4am.

In Bangkok, both The BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway are operating as normal during the day, but will stop services at 9pm for the duration of the curfew. However, BTS and MRT urge all those travelling with the transport networks not to show up at 9pm in order to catch the last trains, as long queues are to be expected.

There have been no reports of any anti-coup protests today. It seems the army has managed to ease some tensions among those opposing the coup by paying off all the rice farmers the money they were owed by the former government. This has been seen a positive step forward in improving the mood.

Thailand Curfew

May 23, 2014 – 12:12 pm

At 16:30 on Thursday afternoon, the Thai military staged a coup that, among other things, dissolved the caretaker government, suspended the constitution, banned gatherings of more than five people, and issued a curfew across the country that starts at 22:00 and ends at 05:00.

The curfew applies to everyone in Thailand, including tourists, and will take place nightly across the whole country until further notice.

Exceptions to the curfew will be allowed for travellers that need to leave or arrive in the country through airports, along with select groups of workers that are needed for night shifts, such as those in the aviation, hospital sectors etc.

However, what the army did not make clear is how travellers (and others) that do not have their own transportation should get to or from the airport, or place of work, during the hours the curfew is in place. All public transport closes down during the curfew, and it will be very hard, if not impossible, to find taxis as they are also supposed to be under the curfew.

Flights are operating as normal at all airports, though if this situation continues for too long there are likely to be numerous flights cancelled. There were also unconfirmed reports last night, that some land border crossings were closed very soon after the coup was first announced.

Travellers should give themselves plenty of time to travel to or from the airport, make copies of emergency numbers, and prepare all necessary documents in case they are asked for them at a military or police check-point.

AirAsia issued a statement last night that said, “the airline highly recommends its guests to allocate no less than 3 hours of travel time to the airport and to stay up to date with traffic news to ensure they do not miss their flights. AirAsia wishes to remind all guests that check-in counters will be closed 45 minutes prior to departure time.”

In its travel advice for Thailand, the UK Government says the following, “There is a risk of a violent reaction to the army’s announcement. We recommend that you exercise extreme caution and remain alert to the situation. If you’re in any doubt about your safety, stay in your accommodation.”

Already, some countries have increased their travel warnings about Thailand. Hong Kong is warning visitors to Thailand to adjust their travel plans, and avoid non-essential travel to the country. Many more of such warnings are to be expected.

Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has issued a statement that says, “Singaporeans should seriously reconsider visiting Thailand at the moment. The situation is unpredictable and volatile, and may evolve quite rapidly … Singaporeans who are travelling to Thailand should exercise a high degree of caution and take all necessary precautions for personal safety, including purchasing comprehensive travel and medical insurance.”

So, in light of these latest developments, should you still travel to Thailand? The likelihood of you getting embroiled in any nastiness – especially outside Bangkok – remains very low so long as you make a point of staying away from the potential flash points… however your insurance company may disagree. Best to check with your local government travel advisory, call your insurance company to find out what status you will have if you still travel, call your airline and hotel see what the status is with regards to cancelations, and also decide whether you want to travel to a country where you are not allowed out between the hours of 22:00 and 05:00.

Martial Law Declared in Thailand

May 20, 2014 – 1:10 pm

This morning at 3am the Thai army declared martial law in Thailand.

The army chief, Gen Prayuth, signed the “first announcement” to set up the Peace-Keeping Command Centre (PKCC) under the military and dissolved the government’s Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order. Under the “second announcement” of the martial law order, which is not a coup, Gen Prayuth, the martial law commander, declared himself director of the PKCC which is “to be responsible for taking action to prevent and mitigate any situation which may affect peace and order and security” throughout the country.

All public transport and tourist attractions, including airports, tourist sites and shopping malls, are currently open and operating as per normal. However, visitors are advised to be vigilant and avoid rally sites and demonstration marches, as well as areas where crowds may gather.

Whaleshark spotting in Donsol, Philippines

April 9, 2014 – 7:10 pm

“Butanding interaction” is the Philippines’ official term for swimming with whalesharks. Butanding, a Bicol dialect word, means blind shark, which is how local fishermen once thought, incorrectly, of these creatures. Local whaleshark guides are known as Butanding interaction officers – or BIO – a somewhat pompous term for a good ol’ boy who has known these leviathans since long before they became ecotourism pin-ups.
Whaleshark_snorkeler_660
The docile giant cruises slowly through the slightly turbid waters of Donsol Bay on the southeast coast of Luzon. Some characters around Donsol claim they discovered whale sharks. These giant cartilaginous fish have probably congregated for eons in this wide, plankton and krill-rich bay in Sorsogon province, but it was only a decade ago that they came to public attention.

Whaleshark interactions occur for short periods each year off Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef, as well as in Belize and other tropical waters, but the highest concentration is thought to be at Donsol, where the whale sharks linger for almost half the year.

Donsol’s whale shark industry is a textbook example of ecotourism succeeding on several levels. Fortunately, the discovery of the butanding, the subsequent influx of tourists and the close regulation of their interaction were virtually concurrent. As a result there are no entrenched jet-ski mafia, speedboaters or ride-the-whale-shark entrepreneurs to be battled against later.

Local fishermen immediately saw that the giant creatures were worth far more alive than dead. With more than 12,000 visitors a year, many Donsol families have found work in the industry and the small resorts that have sprung up along the shore, billed as whale shark capital of the world.

Whale sharks are common in Donsol from December to June; December-January is peak period. Definitely avoid the crowds during Easter Holy Week. The annual Butanding Festival is held at the beginning of May.
