Indonesia Escapes & Hideaways
Manado / Bunaken, Indonesia
RELATED:
Mapia Resort is located on Kalasey Beach, 20 minutes by car south of Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is set in a rich tropical garden with many coconut trees and rare plants native to the South-East Asian forests.
The resort is composed of 11 wooden cottages, built in the traditional Minahasa style (from the north of Sulawesi), All cottages are designed according to European standards, bathrooms with running freshwater, hot shower, ceiling fan and air conditioning.
Cottages are in 2 styles: Standard and Superior, the latter being really large, with two big windows facing towards the garden, swimming pool, the sea and Bunaken Marine Park. Two are family cottages featuring a second room with two single beds.
Mapia Resort's cottage interiors are simple and functional with comfortable beds. The windows and a ceiling fan ensure a natural cool breeze if you do not want to use air conditioning.
As well as having its own terrace, each cottage is large enough to take care of your underwater video/photography equipment.
Mapia's restaurant offers a wide choice of Indonesian traditional recipes, plus Italian and international menus, and features a seaview terrace on which to enjoy an aperitivo before dinner.
The Spa Pavillion
The Mapia Spa offers a wide selection of massages and treatments to chose from, to suit every taste and requirement. The Spa menu ranges from traditional Indonesian massages to specialised treatments like a deep-relaxation after-sun massage.
Certified therapists will be happy to assist with the selection of the best individual treatment or to develop a personlised treatment schedule for your time at Mapia Resort. Attractive Spa packages are also available on request.
Diving at Mapia
Mapia Resort's house reef is just a short walk from the cottages and offers a huge number of fascinating subjects for macro photography.
The dive centre at Mapia is run by Celebes Divers who have been long established in thearea. Divers are taken out into the Bunaken Marine Park by one of four perahu, large traditional-style, engine powered wooden boats 12 to 16 m long, carrying up 10 divers each. Each boat is staffed with highly trained crew for full comfort and safety. On the boat you will find drinking water, hot water for tea or coffee, cookies and, after the dive, some sweet sliced pineapple.
Diving is in small groups for safety reasons and to guarantee that everybody can enjoy observing even the smallest critters.
Tanks: Celebes Divers have 165 INT tanks, in 10 and 12 litrea. If you have a DIN regulator, bring an adapter with you. Complete and professionally maintained rental dive gear is available for up to 10 divers. Air supplied by 3 BAUER and 1 brand new Coltri HP compressors and a COLTRI NITROX MEMBRANE SYSTEM.
Dive Training: Celebes Divers offer PADI dive courses all the way up to Dive Master, including Junior Open Water certification for children over 10 years.
Celebes Divers also operate a second resort, Onong Resort, located on the coral island of Siladen.
The normal diving packages include 2 or 3 daily boat dives plus late afternoon or night dives from the shore. Lunch is served on Bunaken island during the diving days.
Both dive centre and resort are run by a team of Italian instructors - 2 of whom are marine biologists - active researchers and photographers. Marine biology courses are offered (in English).
