May 23, 2012 – 1:40 pm

Former England captain Steve Borthwick will lead a powerful Saracens team to play the BGC APBs in Hong Kong’s Chartis Cup on Saturday, 9 June 2012.

The squad includes 2007 World Cup-winning Springbok captain John Smit, England internationals Borthwick, Richard Wigglesworth and Hugh Vyvyan, England Saxons Adam Powell and Nils Mordt, plus a host of up-and-coming stars including Jamie George, George Kruis, James Short, Jackson Wray, Will Fraser and Mako Vunipola.

There is also a place in the Saracens squad for current England U18 international Nathan Earle, who will return to Hong Kong, his birthplace.

Saracens, the 2011 English Premiership champions, will take on a star-studded BGC APBs team who include the likes of legends Mils Muliaina, Jerry Collins, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Rico Gear, Shane Williams and the Tuilagi brothers, Alesana and Henry.

The Chartis Cup will be the centrepiece of a day-long rugby festival at Hong Kong Stadium and nearby So Kon Po Sports Ground that will feature minis and veterans tournaments plus a family-friendly Rugby Village at the Indian Recreation Club that will boast F&B, a children’s play area and big TV screens so fans can watch the day’s international matches later in the evening.

Admission to the Rugby Village is free. And, as a bonus, the BGC APBs and Saracens players will drop by after the Chartis Cup to mingle with spectators and sign autographs.

The Chartis Cup is a charity match, with proceeds going to the Royal Project office in Thailand to help rebuild schools in areas affected by the massive flooding in parts of the country late last year.

Phuket Cricket Sixes starts this week

April 19, 2012 – 12:33 pm

Twenty-four teams from eight countries will do battle at the 9th annual Phuket International Cricket Sixes tournament being played this week in Phuket from 19-22nd April.

Teams from Australia, India, Pakistan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Thailand and around the Asia Pacific region will enjoy four days of cricket, with the action starting at 9am this morning.

The tournament will be played at the new Kata Group Sports Ground (KGSG) being used for the tournament for the first time this year.

Sixes is a shortened, highly entertaining, all action version of cricket in which matches take just half an hour to complete.

In a precursor tournament, the Southern Stars team from Australia won the final of the Karon Sea Sands Beach Cricket tournament against the Thailand Rugby League in fantastic sunny weather on the beach at Karon, Phuket on Tuesday.

Always an entertaining afternoon with some special fun rules, including players having to field with one hand holding a beer, the beach cricket tournament was a big hit with the teams and supporters and attracted quite a crowd.

New Shipwreck for divers at P Tioman, Malaysia

April 3, 2012 – 7:05 pm

Pulau Tioman, the towering, tropical forest-clad, coral-fringed island off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, has a new shipwreck to dive.

The former Royal Malaysian Navy warship KM Sipadan was sunk on 28th March 2012 to become an artificial reef.

KM Sipadan was commissioned some 48 years ago under the original name KD Sri Sarawak. It was decommissioned in 2005 and deployed to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. Prior to sinking, she was cleaned so as not to pollute the South China Sea, and the engine and weapons were removed.

The KM Sipadan is 31m long and 4.5m wide and lies at the Sawadee dive site at around 30 metres depth, with the deck at around 25 metres. Sawadee is just south of Pulau Tioman’s popular ABC beach area so is easy to reach.

The Sipadan wreck will soon be covered in marine life and we can’t wait until the marine park officially releases the wreck to divers which will happen once it is firmly settled on the seabed. She is fully penetrable but still needs to be mapped to ensure safe entry and exit.

Plans are afoot to offer special training packages including Nitrox, Wreck and Deep Specialty courses.

Contact Symbiosis for more info and to arrange a trip to Peninsular Malaysia.
