Calamian Sea Safari
Overview | Typical Itinerary
Discover why Jacques Cousteau considered Palawan to be the last frontier. The least populated of the Philippines' provinces and the most richly forested, Palawan hosts wealth of wildlife, including many endemic species, while being fringed by some of the richest reefs in the world.
Our adventure focuses on the small group of islands that lie between the main, finger-shaped island that points down to Borneo, and the island of Mindoro to the northeast. To the west lies the South China Sea, and to the south the Sulu Sea.
Travelling by traditional motorised "banca" (outrigger boat) we will cruise among a cluster of more than 200 islands to visit remote white sandy beaches, paddle kayaks below the rugged, towering limestone walls of Coron Island, and snorkel over one of the most diverse marine environments on the planet. Accommodation will in beach camps and in small island resorts.
For scuba diving enthusiasts, this is also the perfect place to extend your trip to explore the world's second largest fleet of sunken Japanese shipwrecks, most of which lie in shallow water and have become kaleidoscopic marine habitats.
Typical Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Busuanga
Pick up from Busuanga Airport for 30 minute drive through to Coron town, checking in to local resort. The rest of the day is spent exploring the town and its sites, like Mount Tapyas from where you can see some of the islands to be visited over coming days. Welcome dinner and orientation. L,D
Day 2: Beach Camp
Check out from resort after early breakfast. (Luggage not needed on the sea safari may be kept at the resort for safe-keeping. ) Depart 9 am on sea safari. First stop Ryukan Channel and kayaking through a mangrove forest to a Japanese wartime wreck on Sangat Island. Banca will meet us off the wreck. Snorkelling, lunch. Banca with kayaks aboard cruise to our beach camp for the night. B,L,D
Day 3: Puerto del Sol
We can expect snorkelling of very high calibre off Calumbuyan Island and kayaking around idyllic palm-fringed islands with white sandy beaches: each kayak comes with a hammock which can be strung between coconut trees as the urge for a siesta takes hold. Late afternoon check-in to Puerto Del Sol resort on a full board basis. Accommodation is in Balinese-style bungalows, each with a pavilion over-looking the sea. B,L,D
Day 4: Coron Island Beach Camp
Today we cruise to Culion, once the largest leper colony in the world. Here are fine examples of American colonial architecture, a large church built atop a Spanish fort and a museum in the former leper hospital documenting the plight of “stolen generations” of Filipinos. Accommodation will be in a beach camp on Coron Island. The location will be ideal for exploring the surrounds—by snorkel and kayak. B,L,D
Day 5: Coron Resort
A full day exploring Coron by banca and kayak follows, with insightful commentary from our guides who, as far as practicable, will connect guests with native Tagbanua, a people who in the 90’s gained ownership of Coron, some adjacent islands and the seas between. It was a first for the Philippines. The people have an environment with hardly a tree out of place, a direct result of their acquiring ancestral domain over a deeply sacred area. Check in to Coron resort. Evening visit to Maquinit Hot Springs. Farewell dinner. B,L,D
Day 6: Depart Busuanga
Check out of Coron resort after breakfast and souvenir shopping. Transfer by Tribal Adventures to Busuanga Airport for flight to Manila. B
