Papua New Guinea Escapes & Hideaways
Rabaul, Papua New Guinea
Conveniently located between Kokopo and Tokua Airport on the Gazelle Peninsular, facing across Simpson Harbour to Rabaul, Rapopo Plantation Resort sits right on the beach with splendid views to Pigeon Island and the bellowing Mt Tavurvur.
Quiet except for the sound of the breaking waves, the views from Rapopo of the smoking volcanoes across the water is one of the world's most spectacular sights.
Floors are polished local timbers or tiles and rooms are fully air-conditioned. The Verandah Restaurant and Bar overlook the Bay and is just one place to sip a chilled South Pacific Beer and relax.
The Gazelle Peninsula on the Island of New Britain, is a paradise of birds, butterflies and lush vegetation; including exotic orchids, bougainvillea and over sixty varieties of frangipani – its natural beauty captured in the harbourside décor and landscaped gardens of Rapopo Plantation Resort.
Rapopo Plantation has its own in-house scuba diving centre teamed by qualified scuba experts who can escort you on an introductory ‘resort’ dive or teach you to become a SSI diver.
Beneath the warm crystal waters is a treasure of marine life – schools of brilliant tropical fish, colourful coral and rare shells. And the tropical waters of Simpson Harbour belie the eerie war museum on the ocean bed – some 65 Japanese warships sunk by allied bombing during World War II.
You may care to take a helicopter to the Pigeon Islands for a picnic lunch or swim from the white sands of the Resort’s beach. You may wish to go deep sea fishing for marlin or sail fish.
Full and half day tours of the Gazelle Peninsula will show you the beautiful and peaceful Bitapaka War Cemetery, cocoa and copra plantations and the unspoilt splendour of its jungle.
