Papua New Guinea Escapes & Hideaways
Papua New Guinea, Papua New Guinea
One of Papua New Guinea's best kept secrets, Tufi Dive Resort is located on the stunning Cape Nelson on the north east coast of the main island, where numerous, steep sided inlets penetrate the land. The resort is nestled on top of a Fjord with 180-degree panoramic views of the sea.
Although primarily a dive resort, Tufi also caters for a whole range of additional activities including blue water fishing, canoeing, bushwalking, bird and butterfly watching. For naturalists, Tufi is home for many of the world's most exquisite orchids.
In February 2000 Tufi underwent major reconstruction and renovations. The new colonial style resort building houses a dining room, lounge, bar, reception, library, office and laundry. Built from timber to harmonise with the tropical surroundings, it features traditional woven mat walls blended with walnut feature panels.
Wide spacious verandahs overlook the sea and fjords, and scattered throughout the complex are many artefacts and traditional costumes from all over PNG. It's an inviting place to relax, relive the days activities and plan the next day's experience. In the evening enjoy a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres by the bar or take in the sunset from the surrounding veranda.
Accommodation
Tufi's bungalows have polished timber floors and are traditionally lined. All creature comforts: screens, air-con, hot water, ensuite bathrooms, bar fridge, coffee and tea making facilities, etc., are available in the rooms. There is a choice of 10 deluxe bungalows, 9 standard air-conditioned bungalows and 8 single fan rooms for the budget traveller. Most units have verandahs overlooking the fjord or Coral sea.
Diving
Cape Nelson is an unspoilt pristine paradise that offers good diving all year round. The fjordlands open onto pristine blue tropical waters of the coastline of Oro Province and Cape Nelson with many uncharted reefs, underwater WWII dive sites and stunning marine biodiversity.
There is a ribbon reef system, not unlike the Barrier Reef in Australia, (nearest reef - excluding our famous House Reef which is 3 minutes from the resort - is only 15 minutes' boat trip away) running parallel to the shore. The reefs come up out of nowhere from a depth of around 600m, hence the excellent visibility.
There is abundant fish life, with large schools of pelagics. Such as a variety of tuna, spanish mackerel, barracuda, white tip reef sharks and the uncommon white hammerhead sharks. Manta and Eagle Rays are often lazily cruising by.
The adjacent mainland areas have a rich local cultural heritage and a scenic beauty that has to be seen to be believed. The best time is from October through mid-June for the really flat seas.
Eco Traveller: For the adventurous, Tufi Dive Resort can arrange trips and overnight stays in local guesthouses inside a typical Oro village environment.
