Indonesia Escapes & Hideaways
Baliem Valley, Indonesia
The BALIEM VALLEY RESORT is located at 1900 metres elevation in the Jayawijaya Highlands if Indonesian West Papua, and is surrounded by mountain rainforests, walking trails, rivers, lakes and villages. Set in 1,600 hectares, this is about as deluxe as it comes for such a remote location, equating to a decent 3 star standard.
The 15 comfortable bungalows are designed in the traditional "Honay" style - spacious, circular houses with thatched roofs, complete with modern bathrooms, picture windows and verandas, offering quite spectacular views over the valley below. Guests can enjoy nature walks through orchid gardens and alpine forests, crossing river gorges by suspension bamboo bridges.
Around 300 Dani farmers live in the area so strolling around the valley is a cultural experience in itself, encountering tiny villages and friendly people. Men stride along the road wearing "kotekas" (penis gourds).
The focus here is on the wonders of the flora and fauna that inhabit the exotic places surrounding the resort - a naturalist's delight - and the cultural exchange with local residents.
There are many fascinating day trips possible out of the resort, and longer “expeditions” – both culture and nature oriented - can also be arranged for the more adventurous. Ask Symbiosis how.
