Itinerary
6 Days Cross Country Mountain Biking - Southern Thailand
Itinerary
Day 1 Nakhon Si Thammarat is both a city and a province that gets very few adventure tourists. This new mountain biking route is truly off the beaten path. Other than a few Thai visitors, this cycling route receives no tourists. Starting off in Nakhon Si Thammarat city, you will be outside of the fairly large, sprawling Thai city within about 20 minutes. The rest of the first day is winding country roads following small, clear rivers, quaint villages, and some bigger roads with wide bike lanes. There is one substantial mountain pass near the end of the day. This is in the area of Khao Luang National Park. This area is gorgeous. This mountain range is rather impressive, though the pass goes through a lower gap. It’s still fairly challenging. The rest of the day is fairly flat. Accommodations this night are at some riverside bungalows near Khao Luang National Park.
Day 2 The second day starts off with a backroad that parallels the main minor highway. You will spend minimal amounts of time on this sparsely traveled road. Not too long into the day, you’ll end up on gravel and dirt roads. Eventually, you will be on some lovely single track trails. Accommodations are at a small, local bungalow operation.
Day 3 The third day starts off with shady winding country roads. Many of these roads are concrete instead of asphalt. That means they are white instead of black. That means they don’t reflect as much heat. A lot of stretches during this whole cycling route are through rubber and palm oil plantations. There is a lot of shade. This day features some splendid dirt road and single track trails. Accommodations this night are at a rather comical ‘themed’ local hotel.
Day 4 The fourth day feathers a lot of dirt mixed in with some scenic country roads. There is a bit of undulation on this day. A lot of this mild up and down is on dirt. The second mountain pass of this entire mountain biking route is on this day. It isn’t nearly as big as the Khao Luang National Park mountain pass. After the pass, you will be on dirt and gravel roads for a bit, and then you will be in an old growth palm oil plantation. Though not the most environmentally friendly way to use the land, oil palms do attract wildlife and they look a bit prehistoric. After a long stretch under the cover of these trees, you will come out onto a minor country road. It is in the sun, but it is a long downhill stretch. After that there is a dirt road section ending in another country road. Accommodations this night are at some nice bungalows In Ao Luk. Ao Luk is a fair busy place, but it is basically one busy intersection. The good side of this is the restaurants. You will have a huge variety of authentic Thai food options here.
Day 5 The fifth day starts from the bungalows in Ao Luk. You will ride on a wonderful loop in a small national park. There are some enchanting small coldspring creeks here and there as well as some old growth jungle. A concrete path has been constructed over a marshy area. This is really fun to ride. You will come out and do a little bit of road work before spending most of the rest of the day doing glorious dirt. Accommodations are the same quaint bungalows in Ao Luk. You can have another feast in town again too.
Day 6 The last day picks up shortly down from where you left off on the previous day. This last day is an appealing mixture of rural roads, dirt roads, concrete roads, and a bit of blacktop.
